My research will combine genetics, genomics, and pathophysiology to discover new links between genes and human disease. Diabetes is a disease that stems from an endocrine dysfunction to encompass infectious disease, neurology, nephrology and cardiovascular medicine, etc. Additionally, diabetes prevalence and incidence is growing at epidemic rates in the US, due to our unique version of malnutrition: hypernutrition. Diabetes affects a patient population of wide age discrepancy from adolescents to senior citizens. The Attie lab studies diabetes on cellular, molecular, genetic and genomic levels. We are searching to identify novel genes and proteins involved in islet and beta-cell biology.
